Madrid Spain.- The crew of the Robert Yered Coast Guard repatriated 88 Cuban rafters to the island this Thursday, after several interdictions off the coast of Florida.
As specified by the United States Coast Guard (USCG, for its acronym in English) through a releasethe first arrest occurred on Saturday morning about 26 miles southwest of the Dry Tortugas, after “a good Samaritan notified the Key West Sector watchers of a makeshift boat.”
Three interdictions occurred Monday: the first about 16 miles east of Key Largo, the second about 29 miles south of Man Key and the third about 39 miles south of Summerland Key.
In all these cases, the Cuban migrants were spotted by crews from the Miami Air Station of the Coast Guard.
In the early hours of Tuesday, the crew of the Coast Guard cutter Charles David Jr. alerted the watchmen of the Key West Sector of the presence of rafters about 25 miles south of Havana, Cuba. While the crew of the Coast Guard cutter Raymond Evans reported another group about 17 miles south of Boca Chica.
In the afternoon a group of Cuban migrants were intercepted about 18 miles south of Key West; and another about 28 miles south of Cayo Pan de Azúcar.
The latest interdiction took place late that same day about 46 miles south of Key West.
In all cases, the Cuban rafters traveled in rustic boats, without the conditions required for this type of crossing.
As on previous occasions, after being detained, the Caribbeans received food, water, shelter and basic medical care.
After the deportation of these 88 people, Lieutenant E´Bria Karega, of the Coast Guard District 7, stated in a message through Twitter: “The Coast Guard and partner agencies continue to patrol the Straits of Florida and the Windward and Mona Passages with the goal of keeping people safe and preventing loss of life resulting from these events. dangerous journeys.
With these new interdictions, the number of Cubans intercepted at sea rises to 4,614 from the beginning of the current fiscal year, on October 1, 2021.
