MIAMI, United States. – The General Assembly of the United Nations agreed this Thursday to suspend Russia from the Human Rights Council, after a vote in which 93 member states opposed Moscow’s permanence in that body, reported the CNN.
For their part, 24 nations, including Cuba, voted for Russia to remain in the UN Human Rights Council and 58 abstained.
In this way, in its session this Thursday, the General Assembly approved suspending Russia for committing “serious and systematic violations of human rights.”
The draft resolution presented to the Human Rights Council specifies that the multinational body is “gravely concerned” by reports of “serious and systematic violations and abuses of human rights” and “violations of international humanitarian law” committed by Russia during his invasion of Ukraine.
“Russia should not have a position of authority in a body whose purpose, whose very purpose, is to promote respect for human rights. It’s not just the height of hypocrisy, it’s dangerous,” US Ambassador to the United Nations Linda Thomas-Greenfield said at Thursday’s session.
“Every day we see more and more how little Russia respects human rights. Russia’s participation in the Human Rights Council damages the Council’s credibility. It undermines the entire UN. And it’s just a mistake,” she concluded.
On the morning of this Thursday, the G7, made up of Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom and the United States, had requested the suspension of Russia from the Council in a statement set citing the list of “grave violations and atrocities.” of international law” committed by Russian forces in Ukraine, including in Bucha.
