Unitarian Platform regrets persecution against the Catholic Church in Nicaragua

The Unitarian Platform said that it will accompany the defenders and activists of Nicaragua in their claims before international bodies. This “is another example of what totalitarian regimes like Daniel Ortega’s do to try to silence dissident and critical voices that collect complaints of human rights violations. This is why the peoples of Nicaragua and Venezuela must remain united in the struggle for freedom.”

The Unitary Platformwhich brings together a dozen Venezuelan opposition political parties, lamented in a statement the persecution against the Catholic Church and Nicaraguan civil society by the Daniel Ortega administration.

In the letter, the Unitarian Platform assures that Nicaragua is subjected to a serious violation of human rights, due to arbitrary arrests, persecution and prosecution of individuals, the media, non-governmental organizations and religious associations.

«The recent and violent attack against the Catholic Church in that country reached a critical point with the arrest of Bishop Rolando Álvarez in the city of Matagalpa» last August 19. The religious was taken along with seven other people from the headquarters of the Episcopal Curia and transferred to the capital Managua.

According to a police statement, the bishop was placed under “house arrest” in Managua, while the rest of the religious were sent to the Directorate of Judicial Assistance, known as the new Chipote.

For the Unitarian Platform, this persecution against religious “does no more than silence critical voices against the Ortega regime, trying to hide the complaints they have made before the international community.”

In addition, they assured that they will accompany the defenders and activists of Nicaragua in their claims before international bodies. This “is another example of what totalitarian regimes like Daniel Ortega’s do to try to silence dissident and critical voices that collect complaints of human rights violations. This is why the peoples of Nicaragua and Venezuela must remain united in the fight for freedom.

In the first half of 2022, the Ortega administration increased the persecution against Nicaraguan religious, forcing several into exile or prisonas well as the confiscation of goods and suppression of services or celebrations of a religious nature under the excuse of “internal security”.

On August 12, the general assembly of the Organization of American States, to which the IACHR belongs, passed a resolution where the harassment of the Daniel Ortega administration against the Catholic Church, the independent press and non-governmental organizations is condemned.

Specifically, they refer to the closure of almost 1,500 NGOs in Nicaragua by order of Ortega, of which the last 100 were outlawed just days ago by the Nicaraguan parliament under the control of the ruling party.
