Various business associations urged the Executive Power this Saturday 25 to approve the addendum for the modernization of the Multipurpose North Terminal of the port of Callao, operated by APM Terminals Callao.
Through a statement, they recalled that last March the Ministry of Transport and Communications (MTC) confirmed its interest in continuing with the approval of said addendum, which has been evaluated for almost 5 years despite its urgency, importance and impact. for foreign trade and for the country in general.
They questioned that there are again delays in the subscription schedule and approval of the addendum to which the MTC committed, which generates great concern for the various actors in the logistics chain.
Thus, urged the Executive to comply with the schedule delivered by the MTC to APM Terminalsin order to complete the approval and signing of the addendum in the second half of August, as planned.
“If the delays by the competent authorities persist, APM Terminals could definitively withdraw the addendum, which will produce logistical cost overruns of more than US$200 million, waiting peaks in the bay of more than 40 days, rejection of more of 500 ships per year and price increases in more than 30% of components of the basic family basket”they underlined.
“This situation would generate a deficit of 7.2 million tons per year in loose cargo, in bulk and construction material, and projects that cannot be served in any port in the country”they added.
They emphasized that the North Terminal of the port of Callao plays a central role in Peru’s economic growth, as it is essential for the country’s competitiveness, well-being and economic, technological and social prosperity, including the provision of direct and indirect employment.
For this reason, the unions required the authorities to comply with the established deadlines, since the constant delays “they put at stake the logistics scenario of the country, creating threats and irreversible damage in the long term”.
“We cannot allow more negative impacts on an economy that has been hit so hard in recent years”sentenced in the document signed by the Peruvian Foreign Trade Society (Comex Peru), the Lima Chamber of Commerce (CCL), the Association of Exporters (ADEX), the Association for the Promotion of National Infrastructure (AFIN), the National Society of Industries (SNI), among others.
