Unions, federations and associations of retirees will prepare a national list of demands addressed to the State, which will include the restitution of salary as a basis for social benefits, vacations and utilities. They tentatively set January 15 as the date to begin street mobilizations for the rescue of the minimum wage
Various union centers, federations and associations of retirees and pensioners in Venezuela signed a “great national agreement” on Thursday to promote a unitary program to fight for a decent wage and in defense of union freedom.
More than 50 union representatives, coming from different ideological currents, condemned the “starvation wages”, the government’s refusal to discuss collective contracts, the systematic violation of freedom of association and the attempts to dismantle union organizations through mechanisms such as the “union constituent”.
The agreement seeks to reconstruct the value of work through three main axes:
- Real recovery of salaries and pensions.
- Full restitution of labor and contractual rights.
- Defense of public freedoms and union autonomy.
Dick Guanique, spokesperson for the National Conflict Committee of Workers in Struggle, assured that “workers always pay for crises and are willing to take to the streets.”
Pedro Arturo Moreno, representative of the Confederation of Venezuelan Workers (CTV), remembered the general secretary of the organization, José Elías Torres, who was detained by the PNB after a raid on his home.
“By supplying it in this act, we claim that we will spare no effort for the freedom of all union fighters imprisoned for defending workers’ rights,” he stated.
National list of unions
Pedro Eusse, general secretary of the Unitary Central of Workers of Venezuela (CUTV), indicated that they will prepare a national list of demands addressed to the State, which will include the restitution of salary as a basis for social benefits, vacations and utilities.
In addition, they will jointly go to international bodies, activating complaints before the International Labor Organization (ILO) for violations of conventions 87 (freedom of association) and 98 (collective bargaining).

Eusse criticized instruments such as Memorandum 2792 of the Ministry of Labor, which they consider unconstitutional and destructive of collective agreements.
At the close of the event, they announced that they will promote additional adhesions and tentatively set January 15 as the date to begin street mobilizations to rescue the living wage.
