Union of judicial officials supported a defender accused of helping a prisoner escape

The Association of Judicial Officials of Uruguay (AFJU) expressed its support for the lawyer Joaquin Gamba before the complaint that he helped a prisoner escape in April of this year from the Tacuarembó Prosecutor’s Office.

Gamba, who is also the former president of the Association of Public Defenders of Uruguay (Adepu), was defended in a statement from the AFJU, where they affirm that he was “permanent support in the dismissal of the former Criminal Judge of the 5th Turn of the City of Tacuarembó”, in addition to denouncing “the actions of the former Judge of Tacuarembó”.

This occurred after El Observador published that Gamba is being investigated administratively and criminally as a result of the escape of a prisoner from the Tacuarembó Prosecutor’s Office in April.

The general secretary of the AFJU, Pablo Elizalde, shared the statement on his personal Twitter account.

“Dr. Gamba has denounced actions that are far from the norm and when not malicious on the part of the Tacuarembó Police Headquarters and the Prosecutor’s Office,” the statement states and adds “But if there are no guarantees of impartiality on the part of the Headquarters of Tacuarembó or of the Prosecutor’s Office, in the first place it is corruption and in the second place justice is not done”.

On the other hand, Gamba, in response to the request for reports from the Supreme Court of Justice, replied that the motivation for the police complaint is due to the multiple complaints of police abuse that he has presented.

The man was detained for theft and, according to what he himself said when he was recaptured a short time later, Gamba had given him the keys to the handcuffs, which allowed him to open them and later escape. That generated the complaint of who was one of the departmental prosecutors, Mabel Brites, who reported what happened to the court prosecutor, Juan Gómez.

The AFJU closes the statement rejecting “mechanisms of intimidation, pressure or extortion by the Tacuarembó Police, Prosecutor’s Office or individuals” and expresses its solidarity with Joaquín Gamba.
