Union housing program inaugurated houses in Fray Bentos

Union housing program inaugurated houses in Fray Bentos

This Sunday, September 11, after several years of waiting and in a very emotional day, 22 families inaugurated their homes in Fray Bentos within the framework of the Union Housing Program. The event was attended by the Mayor of Río Negro, Omar Lafluf; and authorities from Cet Pvs, who carried out the project and accompanied the cooperative whose members belong to Sunca throughout the process.

The houses, according to Eduardo Tropiano, a member of Cet PVS, were made with the non-traditional construction method M2 and are installed at the end of Colón Street, in Fray Bentos.

With this inauguration, there are already 200 houses that have been built in Fray Bentos with the Union Housing Program, reported Tropiano.

As for this cooperative, he said that from the beginning “they have fought a lot and it is once again demonstrated that organized workers have the ability to build and access our housing,” he said.

She also highlighted the importance of the role of women in the current cooperative movement.

“They build their homes and conduct the processes,” said Tropiano.

And he added that it is necessary to “improve cooperative procedures so that the processes are not so long and bureaucratic.”

“Since our foundation, the Pvs has been claiming and fighting for access to decent quality housing, with fairer and faster processes,” explained Tropiano.

For his part, the mayor of Río Negro, Omar Lafluf, who was present at the event, said that witnessing this inauguration of new homes “is one of the most beautiful things that can happen to a ruler.” And he was “very happy” to participate in this instance.

One of the beneficiaries of the housing lottery was Blanca Pereira, who at 69 years old managed to have her own home with great effort.

“This cooperative stood out for the presence of women, mainly mothers with children, who carried the cooperative forward despite all the problems that have arisen over the years,” she began by telling.

He added: “Today is a great day for us. Sacrifice is the main thing to be able to achieve your own roof. But let those who are waiting to build their home know that it can and is achieved”.

This is the Covisin 12 cooperative, which was formed in July 2013, and since then they have been struggling to build the houses. Despite having entered 3 draws and not having left, they did not lower their arms and this Saturday the dream of having their own home came true.

The cooperative is made up mostly of women: there are 22 families, of which 20 are headed by mothers who are heads of households.

The Union Housing Program plans to close the year with 2,000 homes built.
