Unión Eléctrica restores service to “a part” of consumers in 12 provinces

UNE, energía eléctrica, Cuba

MIAMI, United States. – The restoration works in the National Electric System (SEN) of Cuba, after Hurricane Ian passed through the West of the Island, have allowed to restore the service “to a part of the consumers in 12 provinces of the country”, according to with a note from the Electric Union quoted by the official newspaper Rebel Youth.

So far, 224 megawatts (MW) have been recovered, benefiting “some areas” of Havana, Matanzas, Cienfuegos, Villa Clara, Sancti Spíritus, Ciego de Ávila, Camagüey, Las Tunas, Holguín, Granma, Santiago de Cuba and Guantanamo.

Specifically in Havana, according to the UNE, the service has been restored in 25 circuits belonging to the municipalities of Centro Habana, Habana Vieja, Habana del Este and Cotorro.

In its note, the UNE also referred to the total blackout occurred this Tuesday, September 27 on the island.

“At 5:24 p.m., weather conditions triggered one of the two transmission lines Guiteras 220 kV (kilovolts) – Matanzas 200 kV, as a result of a broken protective cable. Faced with this condition, actions were taken to reduce the transfer of power to the central-eastern zone”, indicated the UNE.

“Then, at 5:52 p.m., the other transmission line Guiteras 220 kV – Matanzas 220 kV was shot, causing the SEN to be linked by the transmission line Cotorro 220 kV – Matanzas 220 kV, which It immediately went out of service as it did not support power transfers”.

“This situation caused a power imbalance due to the excess generation in the western zone and the generation deficit in the central-eastern zone, which caused a phenomenon of instability in the frequency in both zones, and consequently the total fall of the SEN. ”, assured the UNE.

This Wednesday the UNE also indicated that the restoration of the National Electric System in the western region of the Island continued to be complex. With the passage of Hurricane Ian “an important part of the transmission network was damaged,” the UNE indicated in Facebook.
