Unión Eléctrica overcomes ruling that left two thirds of Cuba without service

OnCubaNews

The Electric Union of Cuba (UNE) reported that the national electrical system is “fully restored” after a fault that affected almost the entire country for six hours.

“It is reported that the SEN was fully restored at 9:26 p.m. There are no effects on the electricity service due to a deficit in generation capacity,” the company reported, after midnight, from Facebook.

On Saturday morning, a human error caused another breakdown in 220 kilovolt high-voltage lines in a substation in the province of Matanzas (west), the technical director of the UNE, Lázaro Guerra, told television, quoted by efe. The affectation was from the province of Matanzas to Guantanamo.

A similar failure in 220-kilovolt high-tension lines caused the interruption of electrical service to almost half of the island five days ago.

He Ministry of Energy and Mines He said that the cause of said breakdown was a fire in a rural area.

On September 27, a massive blackout was recorded after Category 3 Hurricane Ian passed through the west of the island.

The Cuban Electric System is going through a precarious situation, reflected last year in daily power cuts of up to 12 hours in some regions. The effects sometimes reached almost 40% of the country.

Among the causes are the age of the eight terrestrial thermoelectric plants with an average of more than 40 years in use; the investment deficit and the lack of fuel.

Blackouts have decreased significantly since the second half of December, and have remained at lower levels in the first weeks of 2023, with effects below 10% during peak demand hours.

The Government reported last Thursday that it foresees an average of interruptions by blackouts of about three hours a day until next May for scheduled maintenance at thermoelectric plants.
