Unifying elections would be a fatal mistake and a democratic setback

Unificación elecciones sería error funesto y un retroceso democrático

He Municipalist Forum (FM) Composed of intellectuals, academics, technicians and social activists, they rejected the unification of presidential, congressional and municipal elections, and therefore recommend the president Luis Abinader keep them separate.

He considered that unifying them would be a fatal mistake and would constitute a democratic regression, above all, of the principle of autonomy that should prevail in the elections of local authorities, which represent one of the two levels of government that prevail in the Constitution.

He indicated that in his reform proposal, President Abinader argues that this measure would allow for better management of the time and resources allocated to the elections, and would avoid duplication of spending and logistical efforts generated by the setting up of several elections on different dates.

The FM believes that such action, if it were to take place, would be a mistake and would constitute a democratic regression, above all, of the principle of autonomy that should prevail in the elections of local authorities, which represents one of the two levels of government that prevail in the Constitution.

He recalled that during the political crisis of 1994, Caused by the electoral fraud against Peña Gómez, some constitutional modifications were made, one of them was the separation of municipal elections from presidential elections.

He said that this reform was a demand of this leader, as an expression of his vocation for reform, modernization of the State and his vision on the importance of local power for development, decentralized management and democracy.

He said that the unification of municipal elections with presidential elections in the 2010 Constitution was an act of counter-reform.

To ratify it in the 2024 reform would be a fatal mistake, a decision that would constitute a denial of the best achievements of the progressive sectors of the then PRD.

The document was signed by 44 people, including sociologists Cesar Perez and Domingo Matiaslawyer Luis Scheker Ortiz, anthropologist Bernardo Matías, and economists Guadalupe Valdez and Francisco Checo.
