“Unidos Podemos” is a group that is currently being established at the national level, and that, according to what was expressed to Diario La R by one of its leaders, Diego Olivera. The sector is located within the Broad Front but with a different and independent profile and path.
So far there are three sectors in the interior that will merge and become part of the Unidos Podemos sector, which is currently in the process of being formed. The young people who have joined with their participation come from Rocha, Soriano, Tacuarembó, Rivera, Montevideo, Canelones and Florida. “We are small groups from each department, with between 8 and 10 people for each department,” said the leader.
“We want youth to get involved, and we have been working on this for a long time, through various processes. This was born thanks to the group called “Brazo Libertador”, a sector at the national level that, according to the last national election, has 16 thousand votes. What we are doing is opening spaces for the next national and departmental elections, in the interior of the country, which is where we are focused,” Olivera said.
Currently, Unidos Podemos has a National Executive made up of 18 people. Nine are women and nine are men, who meet every 15 days. According to Olivera, today he does not feel identified with any “big” sector of the Broad Front. In other words, he does not feel represented by socialists, communists, the Popular Participation Movement (MPP) or any other party within the FA. “Since we exist, we have been independent,” he said. Among the issues that he is currently working on with different commissions, is culture, gender, sport and sport in disability.
Regarding the year 2023 and the definition of candidacies, Olivera said that “from what we are seeing, there could be four candidates in the FA. But we focus on what is ours, and we think that each pre-candidate for the inmates, whether senator, representative or mayor, if he holds a position for five years, he has to exercise it and occupy those five years. And not do so much politics. He added that regarding candidacies, the sector “has not yet taken a position,” but it is clear that for the presidency, the Broad Front would have to have a female candidate at the head of the formula.
Olivera also commented that a youth meeting will be organized between the months of January and February, which would be the first presented by the group. “We believe that youth have to begin to take responsibility and take an interest in politics. This event will be in Montevideo. The leader also pointed out that the group aims to work on the issue of young people who in the future may hold positions as mayors, municipal councilors and mayors. “We think that young people are the ones who can contribute the most to the development of the territory,” he said.
He stressed that during December, the different members of the Executive will travel to different points in the interior, to have meetings and talk with citizens from different parts of the national territory. “For us, the interior is very important,” said Olivera, who explained that the group must be established and operational before June 2023.
For the leader, from Unidos Podemos it is observed that the main problem that Uruguay has today is work, and along with it social security, an issue in which he considers that “it is necessary to discuss. You can’t say anything. There are many who are arguing about it, and many disagree. You have to study everything very well”.
