He Population Fund of the United Nations (UNFPA) celebrates 50 years in the Dominican Republic working in aspects such as gender equality or the prevention of domestic violence and sexist, through safe motherhood or training and education.
This United Nations agency has been operating since October 1974, ensuring rights and options for all, as indicated in its motto for the anniversary, its “mission is to contribute to a Dominican Republic where every pregnancy is desired, every birth is safe, every young person achieves their full development”.
Although pregnancies in girls and young women between 10 and 19 years old show a sustained downward trend, the country has the Specific Rate of Adolescent Fertility highest in Latin America and, according to official data, in 2023 there were 23,070 pregnancies in minors.
“He UNFPA is proud to celebrate 50 years of cooperation with the Dominican Republic and is ready to support the Government in the implementation of these recommendations, particularly in the areas of sexual health and reproductive, gender equality and rights of young people,” the director for Cuba and the Dominican Republic of UNFPAAlanna Armitage.
The Dominican Republic is one of the Latin American countries with one of the highest rates of femicides (2.7 per 100,000 inhabitants), hence the need for the work of the UNFPA in the country
