Unemployment rate in Mexico falls to 3% in the last quarter of 2022

Which means that, in the period from October to December, there were 58.3 million Mexicans employed in a job position, out of a total of 60.1 million who actively sought work.

Compared to the same quarter of 2021, the employed population grew by 1.7 million. Said change was concentrated in commerce, with an increase of 279,000 people; in the manufacturing industry, with 260,000 and in restaurants and lodging services, with 217,000 people.

It should be remembered that in the third quarter of 2022, the unemployed population was 3.4% of the Economically Active Population.

The employed population in medium-sized establishments grew by 468 thousand people; in the small ones, 435 thousand and in the big ones, 365 thousand.

In the fourth quarter of 2022, the underemployed population was 4.4 million people and represented a rate of 7.5% of the employed population, a percentage lower than that of the fourth quarter of 2021 (10.6%).

The cities with the highest underemployment rate were: Ciudad del Carmen (23.9%), Coatzacoalcos (14.9%), Tapachula (13.9%), Tlaxcala (13.4%), Oaxaca (10.3%) and Mexico City (10.2%). The lowest rates occurred in Querétaro (0.7%), Tijuana (1.2%), Aguascalientes (1.9%), Cuernavaca (2.1%) and Toluca (2.2%).

Informality is also increasing

The results of the ENOEN indicate that, in the fourth quarter of 2022, the sum of people in all forms of informal employment was 32.2 million. This represented 55.1% of the employed population (Labor Informality Rate), an increase of 548 thousand people compared to the same period of 2021.

The highest rates of labor informality by state were reported in Oaxaca (81.2%), Guerrero (79%), and Chiapas (75.2%). The lowest rates, during the fourth quarter of 2022, were registered in Coahuila de Zaragoza (34.2%), Nuevo León (35.8%), Baja California (36.6%) and Chihuahua (36.8%).
