UNDP report warns that nine out of 10 people are biased against women

The head of the Office in charge of the UNDP Human Development Report, Pedro Conceição, stated that “social norms that undermine women’s rights harm society in general and slow down the expansion of human development”.

“Justified violence”

The report found that 25% of people believe that a man is justified in hitting his wife. It argues that these prejudices drive the obstacles women face, manifesting in a dismantling of their rights in many parts of the world, with movements against gender equality gaining ground and, in some countries, an increase in women’s rights. human rights violations.

The objective of this index is to capture how social norms impede gender equality in the political, educational, economic and physical integrity spheres. The result thereof, that gender biases are deeply rooted in society and prevail in men and women. “Social norms profoundly shape attitudes, social relationships and power dynamics,” lamented UNDP.

Based on the latest data from the World Values Survey, which covers 85% of the world’s population, the United Nations found a lack of progress in terms of social prejudices against women.
