The Undersecretary of the Interior, Manuel Monsalve, responded to criticism from the opposition after the Government’s decision not to decree a State of Exception in the Los Ríos Region, in the face of statements made by some parliamentarians who described the decision as “a mockery ” or “a somersault”.
“I do not like those words because I was a parliamentarian for 16 years and I know very well what the function of parliament is. Parliamentarians represent the popular will of their region, defend the rights of their region. I do not like confrontational language, and I want to say that Opinions evolve. I was in Los Ríos sitting with several authorities and parliamentarians, and the majority opinion was to have a stage of increasing security conditions without a State of Exception,” said Undersecretary Monsalve, in conversation with Radius Guideline.

The head of the Undersecretary of the Interior maintained that “the minister (Izkia Siches) has maintained exactly the same line (…) The doors of all the tools have always been kept open. In addition, the minister also reported that there were new elements of analysis that had to do with police records and intelligence that were going to be considered for decision-making.
Let us remember that the Minister of the Interior, Izkia Siches, announced yesterday that the Government will not apply the State of Exception in Los Ríos. The Secretary of State indicated that the number of violent acts in the area “are far” from those that occurred in the regions of La Araucanía and Biobío.
The Undersecretary of the Interior concluded by noting that “we are convinced that it is essential to strengthen security measures in the Los Ríos region, but we believe that today these security measures can be improved by strengthening police and criminal prosecution capabilities.”
