The Undersecretary of the Interior, Manuel Monsalve, referred to the speculation about the presence of Salvadoran “maras” in Chile. In this sense, he reiterated his suspicion in this regard after the concern that the issue has generated in the country.
Specifically, and within the framework of his activities in the Biobío region, the Undersecretary of State emphasized that “I want to end by clarifying a situation, because this alleged presence of the ‘maras’ in Chile has been widely covered in the media. And I want to totally deny it, because assertions of this nature have to have a serious basis, because they generate uncertainty and fear”.
Complementing the previous point, Monsalve declared that there is no information that allows us to say that the Salvadoran “maras” are on national soil. Likewise, he revealed that no one from the Judiciary has asked him that criminal gangs are operating in the country.
“There is no police intelligence agency that has information that would allow anyone in this country to say that the gangs have an organized presence in Chile,” he explained.
“I have met with the previous National Prosecutor (Jorge Abbott), with the current one (Ángel Valencia) and with the prosecutors of the northern zone; in no meeting with them has the possibility that the gangs are participating in an organized manner been raised. country,” concluded Monsalve.
