Underemployment among young people is growing in the Junín region according to INEI

According to information from the National Institute of Statistics and Informatics, the unemployment rate among young people aged 14 to 24 in 2023 reached 14.9%, that is, 5.3% more than in 2022, reported the regional director of INEI Junín, Jhon Zumaeta. In 2022, the unemployment rate was 9.6%.

According to Comex Peru, young people (14 to 29 years old) reported the highest unemployment rate in 2023, according to the Peruvian Labor Market Performance Report.

In total, there were 460,028 in this condition, which represented 9.2% of those who participated in the labor market. Among the main limitations, the lack of capacities and skills required to find a first job stands out.

They are looking for work. About 6 in 10 young people looked for work or were working last year, which is also the lowest rate of participation in the labour market, compared to other age groups. They participate less because they have other responsibilities, such as studies. Even so, a significant proportion of those who are not looking for work, despite wanting to do so, are not studying.

The young population that is neither looking for work nor working rose to 3.6 million in 2023, according to the National Permanent Employment Survey (EPEN). This represented an increase of 124,653 people in inactivity. Only two-thirds of this population was studying, which is equivalent to 2.4 million.

25.2% of young people who were not looking for work or working limited themselves to doing housework instead of studying.

Women. Almost a third of women aged 14 and over in Junín do not have their own income. In 2022, according to the National Household Survey, 29.1% of women aged 14 and over do not have their own income, this proportion being 2.4 times higher than that of men (12.1%).

This indicator reflects the barriers that women face in accessing income through paid activities in the labour market, as well as property or credit, among others.

Councillor Betsabé Fabián regretted that there are thousands of underemployed young people, which forces them to start their own businesses.
