inside of one of the most sensitive directorates of the National Police (PNP) There has been uncertainty for several days regarding who will finally be the new police chief who will assume his leadership. The Directorate Against Corruption (DIRCOCOR) is where the investigations and operations against officials and authorities of all levels and political persuasion fall.
On February 8, President Pedro Castillo and the Minister of the Interior, Alonso Chávarry, included the DIRCOCOR among the 58 changes made to the internal Police, which also includes the Dirila (Money Laundering Directorate) and other units.
From that date, it was decided that General Adolfo Gregorio Valverde Arcos would go from heading the Ica Police Front to now directing the anti-corruption directorate.
However, it was only a matter of hours before it became known that Valverde is facing an investigation at the Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office as a result of an irregular purchase of protective equipment (masks, gloves, gel alcohol) for the police force in the midst of the first wave of the COVID-19, when he was in charge of the X Macro Police Region of Puno.
The equipment, in addition to allegedly having been overvalued, would not have met a quality standard either, putting the lives of police officers at risk.
This case had already been the reason for the departure of Valverde Arcos from the Puno police region in May 2020. Fiscal sources confirmed yesterday to this newspaper that the investigation in the Public Ministry is still ongoing.
Meanwhile, within the Police, other sources from Peru21 detailed that, upon learning of the corruption investigation, Valverde’s transfer was practically frustrated and, so far, he has not formally assumed his new assignment, as has already happened with other police chiefs in most other directions. The situation of Adolfo Valverde, to a good account, was put on hold for now.
“He is with an investigation and for that detail he is going to occupy another directorate, but not the DIRCOCOR. We are waiting for another resolution to come out, ”said one of the sources.
For now, the person in charge of DIRCOCOR until a new replacement is named —and becomes effective— is Colonel Arturo Valverde Inga. There are two generals among those announced, but nothing concrete yet.
Another source from the high command of the PNP explained to this newspaper that there are expected to be “reassignments” in the table that was published on February 8, and that one of them will be in the DIRCOCOR. “Two or three readjustments will be made at most,” he detailed.
This newspaper tried to communicate with General Valverde Arcos, but there was no response.
Keep in mind
- The DIRCOCOR carried out successful operations that ended with important authorities placed at the forefront of justice, including governors (such as Elmer Cáceres Llica) and mayors.
- He also participates in the case involving lobbyist Karelim López and others for irregularities in Petroperú.
