Unasev delivered helmets for motorcyclists and books on road safety

Municipality F of Montevideo received, this Tuesday the 30th, from the National Road Safety Unit (Unasev), 20 certified protection helmets for motorcyclists and 12 sets of storybooks to promote road safety among schoolchildren. In addition, the institution organized a discussion with students and residents of the area on prevention measures in traffic.

The president of Unasev, Alejandro Draper, participated in the activity; the mayor of Municipality F of Montevideo, Juan Pedro López, the members of the Unasev Board of Directors Carlos Manzor and Mauricio Viera, and municipal officials.

The delivery of helmets and the awareness day are part of the work plan that Unasev arranged in coordination with all the municipalities of Montevideo. In this case, the state agency will allocate four helmets and four books to the institutions participating in the discussion: two of each to high school 58 and the rest to the UTU of Flor de Maroñas.

The helmets were donated by the International Automobile Federation (FIA), through the Automobile Club of Uruguay (ACU), and the storybooks are part of an agreement with Fundación MAPFRE, which collaborated to adapt the texts that will be used to spread prevention in the territory of Municipality F.

The president of Unasev, Alejandro Draper, explained that he works on four pillars: education, decentralization, control and coordination. The instances are aimed, in particular, at the most vulnerable users, those who drive motorcycles or bicycles, as well as pedestrians.

He added that traffic accidents are “the Achilles’ heel” and described them as a pandemic for which there is no vaccine. However, he highlighted that Unasev works to reduce accident rates. Compared to the first half of 2021, in the first six months of 2022, the number of deaths decreased from 52% to 45%

In Municipality F of Montevideo, there is a high motorcycle accident rate, due to the lack of use of helmets and the misuse of birodades with the presence of more than two people, reported the mayor of that area. Therefore, López highlighted the importance of these talks as a way to promote traffic safety.
