UNAM: The plagiarism in the Esquivel case is evident; “facts are contradictory,” he says

The UNAM pointed out that the academic review of the contents of both theses, their publication dates, as well as the physical and digital archives of the University, lead to the presumption that the original thesis was the one supported in 1986.

However, the academic authority reported that a few hours before starting their meeting, the Academic and Scientific Integrity Committee of the FES Aragón received a notarized testimony containing a letter from the person who supported his thesis in 1986, stating that he used various references, texts and important parts of the content of the thesis published later, in 1987.

The UNAM pointed out that in view of these contradictory facts and without being certain of the dimension of the plagiarism expressed in the testimony of the former student of the 1986 thesis, it is evident that it is necessary to collect additional information to deepen the documentary analysis and, if applicable, , call the parties involved.

Minister Esquivel assured yesterday that the file of her thesis was “improperly and illegally modified on December 22, 2022.” In this regard, the UNAM pointed out that in the eighties, it microfilmed the theses presented.

In the year two thousand, the digitization of microfilmed theses began to convert them into PDF files, detailed the UNAM.

When comparing the PDFs of the theses in question, the absence of eight pages was observed in the file of the former student’s work, he added.

“Therefore, there was a need to retake the microfilm to scan the missing pages and complete the PDF in the TESIUNAM repository. All of the above is available to the experts mentioned by the former student,” said the highest house of studies.

FES postpones resolution

The Academic and Scientific Integrity Committee of the Faculty of Higher Studies (FES) Aragón reported this Saturday that, after carrying out an analysis of the thesis work of Minister Yasmín Esquivel and the other person accused of alleged plagiarism, it was determined that there is “a high level of coincidence” between the works, although for the moment the necessary elements are not available to carry out a determination of the responsibilities of the parties involved.

Through a statement, the FES Aragón explained that the resolution on the alleged plagiarism of the minister’s degree thesis will be issued until academic-administrative activities are resumed on campus, which will be after the election in the Supreme Court. Court.

“After carrying out a detailed analysis of the theses, by comparing the one presented by a former student of this Faculty, with that of a former student of the Faculty of Law, as well as assessing the elements of construction, development, style, ideas and information contained in both works, their temporality in the generation of academic records, the information and evidence that the parties sent to this Committee; it was determined that there is a high level of coincidence between both documentary works, however, considering that the parties involved exhibited new documentation, at this time there are not enough elements to make a comprehensive evaluation of the case that allows establishing the responsibilities of the parties involved, derived from the plagiarism between both theses,” shared the Academic and Scientific Integrity Committee of the FES Aragon.

As planned, on January 2, the successor or successor of Arturo Zaldívar will be elected in the presidency of the SCJN, to which Minister Esquivel aspires.

As reported by the FES Aragón, “once the academic-administrative activities at the Faculty have resumed, a next session will be convened to continue the work, as well as to analyze the performance and observance of the university ethical principles of the adviser of both theses, with strict adherence to university regulations and full respect for the rights of all parties”.
