Students from the Faculty of Chemistry at UNAM are on strike again. Among their demands is the demand for a fumigation campaign. because there are bedbugs in classrooms and cubicles; the laboratories are in poor condition and the reagents are out of date
; bathroom maintenance is pending; the methods of grading must be reviewed, as well as standardizing the extraordinary exams and ensuring that young people who sell crafts, food and other items in the academic institution are respected.”
They demand that the faculty management sign a letter of no retaliation against the students who took over the facilities of that educational institution, because, if not, they can be expelled
.
Students who asked to remain anonymous to avoid retaliation said that yesterday they met with Carlos Amador Bedolla, director of the faculty, But there was no dialogue, he refused to sign the letter of non-reprisals and he just wants to give us the finger. There were no answers to our requests.
.
The university students emphasized: Last October there was a strike at the faculty, because we reported that there were bedbugs. On that occasion it lasted three days and the authorities denied that there were bedbugs, but two companies came to fumigate and they not only detected bedbugs, but also cockroaches, ants and spiders. After the strike, the authorities promised that there would be a fumigation every three months, and one year after the commitment, no fumigation has been registered.
.
They also pointed out that There are several bathrooms closed, they have not been working for a year, and the authorities say that they are under maintenance. How can a bathroom be under maintenance for a year or more? They have not done anything to them, they just closed them.
.
Regarding the standardization of extraordinary exams, they accused: Since there is no standardization, when we take an extraordinary exam, they don’t ask us about the syllabus or what we saw in the course, but the questions correspond to another course, that is, to something that we didn’t study because it corresponds to a later course.
.
They stressed that they will maintain the strike which 79.6 percent of students support, according to a survey we conducted; only 10.7 percent were against and 9.6 percent abstained.
