The National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) received this week the visit of a delegation of specialists from the Institute for Water Resources (IWHR) of China, with the purpose of promoting joint projects in water management and technological development for the preservation of ecosystems.
During the meeting at the Institute of Engineering of the UNAM, its director, Rosa María Ramírez Zamora, stressed that water -related problems require a global vision and international cooperation. “Each nation faces similar challenges and for us it is a recognition that institutions of great world prestige seek us to collaborate in plans, projects and exchange of students,” he said.
On the part of the Chinese delegation, the director of International Cooperation of the IWHR, Wang Yujie, stressed that Mexico and China share water similarities, with regions of northern poor availability and southern areas with abundance of water. He affirmed that, despite the geographical distance, both nations can approach through scientific cooperation. “We know that UNAM is a large and relevant institution, so we want to work with you and exchange knowledge among colleagues,” he said.
The Chinese representative added that the IWHR maintains links with various universities and international organizations, so he trusted that UNAM will be integrated into its global cooperation network.
At the meeting, held at the Emilio Rosenblueth Seminary Hall, a Chilean delegation also participated. Gustavo Macaya Aguirre, from the Catholic University of the North in Santiago, explained that his visit is part of a decenal plan funded by the Chilean government to strengthen scientific research and international cooperation.
The specialist indicated that they have established links with institutions from several countries in Latin America and Europe, and that in the case of Mexico they seek to strengthen collaboration in strategic areas such as seismology, mining and, in a priority, water security.
