Unab: Sanctions against Ortega judges are "a very important step in the search for justice"

The Blue and White National Unity (Unab) thanked the MEPs for approving the resolution that seeks to sanction the judges responsible for prosecuting the political prisoners of the regime of Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo. “This is a very important step in the search for justice,” considers the opposition organization.

“We salute and appreciate the resolution approved this morning (June 9) by the European Parliament with 524 votes in favor, 17 against and 29 abstentions, which is considered a very strong majority and which goes to one of the motor nerves of the repression in Nicaragua, which are the judges and magistrates, points to 14 judges and three magistrates from Managua by name and surname and mentions them as the oppressive arm of the regime against opponents,” said Ana Quirós, a member of the Political Council of Unab, in a video released by the political organization.

The European Parliament condemned the persecution of the opposition, the press and civil society in Nicaragua, where the deprivation of liberty for political reasons, indicated by humanitarian organizations, has been increasing since 2018. According to the European Parliament, the illegitimate judicial sentences confirm the repressive drift of the Nicaraguan regime “with the patent collusion of the Judiciary,” aimed at silencing dissidents.

Quirós said that “this is a very important step in the search for justice for the victims, in the demand for the release of the more than 180 political prisoners, he even points out the demand to release Father Manuel (Salvador García) who was imprisoned arbitrarily”.

The text of the resolution indicates that the lack of separation of powers and the total control of the institutions by the regime gives rise to the subjugation of the Judiciary and the Prosecutor’s Office to the will of the regime “in order to establish a dictatorship ». “The judges have become a repressive arm responsible for human rights violations,” say the MEPs.

Among the judges proposed to sanction are: Verónica Fiallos Moncada, of the Ocotal Criminal District Court; Rosa Velia Baca Cardoza, of the Chinandega First Criminal District Court; William Irving Howard López, of the Masaya Criminal District Court; and Erick Ramón Laguna Averruz, of the District Court of the Department of Estelí.

The initiative is led by MEPs Soraya Rodríguez, Javier Nart and Jordi Cañas. They allege that this group should be sanctioned by the European Union (EU) for prosecuting, convicting and sentencing hundreds of political prisoners since the beginning of the social protests in April 2018.
