UN Women urges action to build an “inclusive digital world”

América Writing, (EFE).- The inclusion of women in technology allows “more creative solutions and has a greater potential for innovations” in favor of gender equality, said UN Women on Thursday, stressing that the low participation of women in the digital field implies “a huge cost” for countries.

The theme of International Women’s Day, which is commemorated on March 8, will be precisely “For an inclusive digital world: Innovation and technology for gender equality”, in order to recognize women, girls and organizations that They promote the advancement of “transformative technology and access to digital education,” this UN agency said in a statement.

According to UN Women’s Gender Snapshot 2022 report, “the exclusion of women from the digital world has cut $1 trillion off the gross domestic product of low- and middle-income countries over the past decade, a loss that will rise to $1.5 trillions of dollars by 2025 if no action is taken.”

The organization defends that “incorporating women, as well as those traditionally marginalized groups, into technology allows for more creative solutions and has greater potential for innovations that meet the needs of women and promote gender equality.”

INEQUALITY AND GENDER VIOLENCE ONLINE

Therefore, for International Women’s Day 2023, it is proposed to analyze the digital gender gap and its impact on the growth of social and economic inequalities.

“Unfortunately, the opportunities opened up by the digital revolution also pose the risk of perpetuating the current dynamics of gender inequality. Growing inequalities are increasingly evident in the context of digital skills and access to technologies, a digital divide that leaves women behind,” the statement said.

Likewise, UN Women, an entity for gender equality and female empowerment, urges to protect the rights of women and girls in digital spaces, as well as address gender violence online.

According to this agency, it is crucial to address the problem of online violence, which, according to a study conducted in 51 countries, “38% of women have suffered personally.”

The UN celebration of International Women’s Day will include a high-level event on 8 March bringing together technology and innovation specialists, government representatives, the feminist movement and gender equality activists, as well as from the private sector.

“Incorporating the gender perspective in innovation, technology and digital education in a transformative way would help women and girls become more aware of their rights and enhance their exercise and activism,” the UN pointed out.
