The United Nations (UN) has published a call for initiatives that can help in the reconstruction of degraded ecosystems around the world. Proposals will be received until March 31. After the selection work that will be carried out by the entity, the approved initiatives will be presented at the United Nations General Assembly, which will be held in September.
According to the UN Environment Program (UNEP), about 75% of land areas and 66% of oceans are severely altered by some type of human activity.
In addition to UNEP, the initiative is also promoted by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO).
So far, 80 manifestations from nations interested in participating in the selection have been received by the bodies. The ten best qualified countries in the selection will receive as prizes the funding for development actions and the entity’s support for the creation of campaigns and multimedia products.
The measure is one of the actions of the Decade of Ecosystem Restoration 2021-2030, in which the UN calls on the world’s population to protect and revitalize ecosystems around the world.
