New York.- The plenary session of the 79th General Assembly of the United Nations (UN) opened this morningUN) with the participation of 191 countries, including Dominican President Luis Abinader, of the 193 members
The General Debate is the main event of the annual United Nations summit, which brings together Heads of State and Government from around the world.
This year’s theme is “Leaving no one behind: working together for peace, sustainable development and human dignity for present and future generations.” However, it is customary for leaders to use this opportunity to highlight issues they consider important.
Of the 193 member countries of the United Nations, only two will not be represented this year: Afghanistan and South Sudan. Instead, Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Pietro Parolin and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas will each deliver speeches, despite the fact that both countries are observer members of the UN.
