Nicolás Maduro asked, in a call with the UN Secretary General, that Donald Trump’s statements be “categorically rejected by the United Nations system, as they constitute a direct threat to sovereignty, international law and peace.”
This Wednesday, Nicolás Maduro held a telephone conversation with the Secretary General of the United Nations, António Guterres, regarding President Donald Trump’s “threats” regarding the Venezuelan oil industry. The UN official highlighted in the call the need to avoid escalating the conflict with the United States.
In a statementbroadcast by the Venezuelan Foreign Ministry on Telegram, it was indicated that during the call Maduro described as “unacceptable” and “expressions of an overt colonial nature” the order issued by Trump to block sanctioned oil tankers entering and leaving Venezuela.
Trump’s announcement, made on the Truth Social network, was accompanied by threats of greater US military deployment in the Caribbean. He assured that the pressure will continue “until they return to the United States all the oil, land and other assets that were previously stolen from us.”
Maduro asked in the call that these statements “must be categorically rejected by the United Nations system, as they constitute a direct threat to sovereignty, international law and peace.”
For his part, the UN Secretary General expressed his commitment to international law and the principles of the United Nations Charter. “He expressed his solidarity with the Venezuelan people and highlighted the need to avoid any escalation or confrontation, pointing out that an armed conflict in the region lacks justification and would be sterile, with serious consequences for regional stability and the peace zone of Latin America and the Caribbean.”

Likewise, it was indicated that it will follow up on the situation that, according to the statement, will be addressed in the UN Security Council, of which the United States is a part and has veto power.
The Maduro administration has rejected through different pronouncements of the public powers the “political, diplomatic and economic siege” that, they have stated, is being committed against the country, as well as the “acts of modern piracy” after the seizure by the US of a ship that was sailing under an alleged false flag of Guyana.
That ship was seized by order of a US judge due to previous links to sanctioned Iranian oil smuggling, although at the time it was transporting Venezuelan crude.
