The UN Secretary General, Antonio Guterres, accepted the invitation of the Colombian Government and the guerrilla of the National Liberation Army, ELN, to accompany the peace talks that are taking place in Caracas.
This was reported by the Colombian High Commissioner for Peace, Danilo Ruedawho published a letter he received from Guterres in which he accepts the role of companion and appoints his representative on that mission.

“We celebrate the positive response of Antonio Guterres to the invitation to participate as a permanent companion in the peace talks between the Government of Colombia and the ELN,” Commissioner Rueda wrote on Twitter.
In the letter published by Rueda, which is dated December 8, the UN Secretary General congratulates the parties “for having reached this essential first stage” to resume talks in Caracas last November and expresses the firm support of the United Nations “to accompany the parties in the search for the peace that the Colombian people so long for.”

“I thank you in particular for your close cooperation with my Special Representative and head of the United Nations Verification Mission in Colombia, Mr. Carlos Ruiz Massieu.and I am pleased to inform you that he will accompany the process on my behalf in accordance with the request of the parties”expresses Guterres in the letter.
For his part, Ruiz Massieu thanked the “trust placed by the parties in the United Nations to accompany the peace talks between the National Government and the ELN” and reiterated its support for that process.
