“We are aware of this video posted on social media which shows a hors de combat Ukrainian soldier who is apparently executed by the Russian armed forces. Based on a preliminary analysis, we think the video appears authentic,” a spokesperson for the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights told the AFP news agency on Wednesday (03.08.2023).
The video of about 12 seconds shows a man in military uniform, unarmed and smoking a cigarette. Another man out of shot says in Russian “film it”.
“Glory to Ukraine!” the Ukrainian replies, and is immediately hit by machine gun bursts. The man behind the camera exclaims “die.”
The video went viral on Monday and posts, photos and drawings paying tribute to the soldier have emerged ever since. The Ukrainian army promised on Tuesday to avenge the soldier, whom he identified according to preliminary data as Tymofiy Mykolayovych Shadura.
