The UN Security Council renewed the mission that supervises the Peace Agreement in Colombia for one year. The US abstained from the vote
The United Nations Security Council renewed this Friday the mission to verify the implementation of the Peace Agreement with the extinct FARC in Colombia. Unlike previous resolutions of this type whose renewal lasted two years, a new policy was adopted for 2025 and the resolution will only last one year.
The United Kingdom, a permanent member of the Council, celebrated the first sentences issued this year by the Special Jurisdiction for Peace (JEP), an organization outside traditional justice created after the signing of the agreement. “We applaud the work of the JEP and celebrate the progress that is being achieved in terms of justice and accountability for victims,” they noted.
The vote It was supported by thirteen of the fifteen members present at the vote. The United States was one of the countries that abstained from supporting the renewal of the mandate but did not vote against it either.

To support the American position, Mike Waltz, the country’s ambassador to the United Nations, again criticized President Gustavo Petro and his policies “failed“of peace.
“President Petro’s political priorities regarding peace and security in Colombia, the region and around the world are misguided and irresponsible and have contributed to further instability and violence in Colombia,” Waltz said.
As previous US officials have said regarding Colombiathe recent decisions against Colombia are not due to a punishment against the Colombian people and their institutions, but specifically against President Petro.

“The United States of America supports peace and security in Colombia, and we want to make that very clear and recorded,” he said at the beginning of his speech, adding: “We look forward to working with the future government of Colombia and understanding its peace and security priorities and therefore the role of this UN mission in supporting those objectives.
