This Tuesday morning, from La Casona, in Venezuela, the representatives of the ELN and the Colombian government formally announced the reactivation of the peace tables for the month of November 2022. “For the government of Colombia and the ELN, the participation of society in this process is essential in the changes that Colombia needs to build peace,” the joint statement said.
Guterres urged the two sides to “fully seize this opportunity to end a deadly decades-long conflict whose resolution is key to expanding the scope of peace in the country.”
“The secretary general is confident that Colombians can demonstrate once again that even the most entrenched conflicts can be resolved through dialogue,” said the Portuguese through a statement reported by his spokesman, Stéphane Dujarric.
Guterres confirmed that the United Nations is ready to facilitate any assistance that may be necessary in these dialogues and in the implementation of the agreements.
The UN Secretary General also highlighted as a positive element that the new negotiations are going to retake the agreements and advances that had been previously achieved, as well as the commitment that civil society participates.
Guterres also thanked Cuba, Norway and Venezuela for their support of the process and asked the rest of the international community to support it as well.
