The United Nations reported this Monday on the activation of its mechanism of Anticipatory Action against the next impact of Hurricane Melissa in Cubawith which it plans to distribute more than 100 tons of rice and emergency materials.
The Office of the United Nations Resident Coordinator in Cuba explained in a statement that given the forecasts of the devastating effects of Melissa Action will be taken in a “preventive” and “proactive” manner in the east of the island.
“At this time, aid is being transported to the most likely affected places and estimates are being made of the possible damage and number of people affected by the impacts,” the note stated.
In addition to the 100 tons of rice, the system of United Nations is going to distribute hygiene kits for 6,500 people, fuel vouchers and water purification plants for 8,000 people a day in the provinces of Villa Clara and Holguín.
The action has financial support from the UN Central Emergency Fund (CERF).

The Institute of Meteorology (Insmet) of Cuba foresees that Melissa made landfall in the eastern end of Cuba in the early hours of Wednesday, as a major hurricanewith heavy rains, strong winds and storm surges.
Floods and landslides are expected, especially in mountainous areas, and also flooding in coastal areas.
The authorities have evacuated or insured nearly 650 thousand people in risk areas.
