The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bacheletmade this Thursday a balance of the situation in the world, after four years in office, and made reference to Colombia.
Bachelet supported the change of approach in anti-drug policy in Colombia announced in his possession by President Gustavo Petro and said that “sustained advocacy on key human rights issues, anchored in international human rights law and standards, bears fruit”.

He noted that the new government in Colombia “has committed to changing its focus on drug policy, from a punitive perspective to a more social and public health one”.
The Chilean Bachelet added that “attending to one of the deep causes of violence in Colombia, this approach could be instrumental to better protect the rights of peasants, indigenous and Afro-Colombian communities and of people who use drugs, both in Colombia and globally.”
The High Commissioner pointed out that in support of Colombia, his “office has been advocating, globally, for a drug policy with a human rights approach”.

Bachelet, who is one week away from concluding her mandate at the head of the largest international structure dedicated to protecting and promoting rights and freedoms in the world, said that “Human rights work is never finished.”
At a press conference to take stock of her administration, the former president of Chile explained that from the perspective of the UN, solutions to problems are sought, but when agreements are barely being reached on how to act, a new crisis arises that concentrates everyone’s attentionas is now the case with the war in Ukraine.
“It’s very frustrating. not being able to go much further and sometimes one feels that the world is not a better place at allr,” he commented.
The covid-19 pandemic was another great obstacle for Bachelet to do what she had planned since this interrupted his visits to the field, his personal contacts with authorities and victims, and even with the staff of his agency in Geneva, at least during the most acute period of contagion.
