The Violence gives no respite in Haiti and the first quarter of 2024 has been the bloodiest in the country since 2022, when the worst wave of crime and crime in recent years began, as revealed this Friday (04/19/2024).
In total, more than 2,500 cases of violent deaths or serious injuries caused by criminal gangs -which represents 53% more in relation to what was the most violent quarter, which was the immediately previous one (October-December 2023)- the spokesman for the United Nations General Secretariat, Stéphane Dujarric, said this Friday, citing figures from the UN mission in the Caribbean country (BINUH).
Most of the crimes were recorded in the capital, Port-au-Prince. BINUH data indicate that there are “an alarming level” of violence against girls and boys, in addition to sexual violence practiced by armed gangs that control capital neighborhoods.
The Caribbean country is mired in a serious crisis of violence caused, among other things, by the lack of institutions, after the assassination of President Jovenel Moïse in 2021 – not yet replaced – and the recent resignation of Prime Minister Ariel Henry.
After several weeks of negotiations, on April 12, a Transition Council was formed in charge of organizing the holding of elections and the formation of a new Government. Meanwhile, the country awaits an international police mission for which several governments have already offered agents, and which will be led by Kenya, but which is delayed due to the lack of funding necessary to pay for that deployment.
