UN experts condemn US blockade, aggression and piracy

Independent experts from the United Nations (UN) rejected the sanctions and naval piracy actions by the United States against Venezuela.

The chancellor, Yván Gil, reported via Telegram that specialists described these measures as “serious violations of international law and the UN Charter.”

Gil pointed out that Venezuela’s position is gaining international recognition: “the policy of threat and looting has been legally and morally exposed,” he stated.

According to experts, there is no legal basis to impose unilateral sanctions through armed blockades. The international organization warned that these actions constitute a prohibited use of military force, according to the United Nations Charter.

The specialists added that the seriousness of the measure is recognized as an illegal armed aggression, in accordance with the definition adopted by the General Assembly in 1974.

According to article 51 of the Charter, this situation would grant the affected State the right to self-defense.

The experts stressed that the use of force at sea and on land endangers fundamental rights in the region and urged States to adopt urgent diplomatic measures to put an end to these executions.

Finally, they urged States to adopt urgent measures to stop the blockade and illegal executions. They suggested using diplomatic protests, General Assembly resolutions and peaceful countermeasures, as well as ensuring that those responsible are brought to justice.

President Donald Trump ordered a naval blockade and threatened oil tankers operating with Venezuela. Under this policy, military forces were deployed to the Caribbean to assault tankers with Venezuelan crude oil.
