The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Michelle Bachelet, denounced on Thursday that the “sociopolitical, economic and human rights crisis” that Nicaragua is experiencing has caused the migration of thousands of people to reach “unprecedented figures.”
Bachelet pointed out that the Government of Daniel Ortega continues to make arbitrary arrests and keep detainees in “deplorable” conditions.
“My Office continues to denounce arbitrary detentions in which detainees face appalling conditions, that hundreds of civil society organizations are being stripped of their legal status, and that, fleeing the crisis, Nicaraguans continue to leave the country in significant numbers. unprecedented,” he warned.
The High Commissioner reiterated her request to the authorities to guarantee the prompt release of all those arbitrarily detained and to preserve their physical and mental integrity.
The number of refugees continues to increase in Costa Rica
Bachelet pointed out that the number of Nicaraguans leaving the country is growing “at unprecedented figures, even higher than those recorded in the 1980s.”
Through a Press release The human rights organization cited that in the last eight months alone, the number of Nicaraguan refugees and asylum seekers in Costa Rica has doubled, reaching 150,000. Which represents, 3% of the population of that nation.
While the number of Nicaraguans intercepted at the borders of the United States had an unprecedented increase, going from “3,164 in September 2020 to 92,037 in April 2022. In March 2022, the figure reached 16,088, the highest recorded until the date for a single month, and eight times higher than that registered in March 2021”, he detailed.
