UN celebrates resumption of dialogues between Colombia and the ELN

The Secretary General of the United Nations (UN) António Guterres, celebrated on Tuesday the resumption of peace talks between the Government of Colombia and the National Liberation Army (ELN),

The UN secretary “has the hope that Colombians can demonstrate once again that even the most entrenched conflicts can be resolved through dialogue,” said Guterres spokesman Stéphane Dujarric, quoted by Third.

The Secretary General also thanked Venezuela, Cuba and Norway for being guarantors in this new peace process, after it was suspended in 2019 during the administration of Iván Duque.

Similarly, he reiterated the willingness of the United Nations to provide assistance in the dialogues and subsequent agreements, through its special representative in the Latin American country.

In Caracas; this Tuesday, the delegations of Colombia and the ELN signed an agreement to re-establish the dialogue process.

“From Caracas, the peace talks are officially resumed between our government and the ELN, together with the guarantor countries of Venezuela, Cuba and Norway,” Colombian President Gustavo Petro announced on his Twitter account.

This agreement indicates that after the first week of November of this year the dialogue process will be restored, so the negotiating tables will be reinstated.

The statement bears the signatures of Iván Danilo Rueda (Colombian High Commissioner for Peace), Antonio García and Pablo Beltrán, first and second commander of the ELN, respectively.
