UN celebrates restart of talks between Colombian government and ELN

This Monday, the special representative of the Secretary General of the United Nations (UN) in Colombia, Carlos Ruiz Massieucelebrated the restart of peace negotiations between the Government of the neighboring country and the National Liberation Army (ELN).

“I welcome the restart of negotiations between the Government of Colombia and the ELN in Caracas. I reiterate the support of the Secretary General @antonioguterres for this process,” said Ruiz Massieu on his account on the social network Twitter.

Likewise, the UN representative called on “the parties and Colombian society to take advantage of this historic opportunity and deepen peace in Colombia.”

This Monday, a delegation from the National Liberation Army (ELN) and one from the Colombian government resumed in Caracas the dialogue process suspended since 2018, reported AVN.

The Colombian Government delegation is represented by Otty Patiño, a former member of the M19 guerrilla; the president of the Colombian Federation of Cattlemen (Fedegan), José Felix Lafaurie; Senators Iván Cepeda and María José Pizarro; the former senator of the Democratic Pole Party, Alberto Castilla, and the anthropologist Horacio Guerrero.

While the ELN delegates are: Pablo Beltrán, Aureliano Carbonell, Bernardo Téllez, Gustavo Martínez, Consuelo Tapias, Silvana Guerreo and Isabel Torres.

At the meeting, the parties agreed to “resume the process of political dialogue with full political and ethical will”, as it is a claim of rural and urban territories that suffer from violence and exclusion’.

It is worth noting that this Monday’s meeting is the first of the guidelines to achieve the objective of “total peace”, promoted by Petro and the cornerstone of his electoral campaign, with which he reached the House of Nariño.

Norway and Cuba remain as guarantor countries of this process that is part of the actions of the government of Petro and Francia Márquez.

For his part, he President Nicolas Maduro has reiterated Venezuela’s support for the dialogue between Colombia and the ELN.
