The General Assembly of the United Nations Organization (UN) approved, this Thursday, February 23, a resolution condemning Russia for the anniversary of the war in Ukraine.
In accordance with Europa Press, The resolution was endorsed in a very symbolic, and non-binding, vote that takes place a few hours after one year has passed since the declaration of war by Russian President Vladimir Putin.
The voting process first began with the amendments tabled by Belarus, which called for a ban on arms supplies to kyiv.
With 141 votes in favor, 7 against (Russia, Belarus, North Korea, Eritrea, NicaraguaMali and Syria) and 32 abstentions (China, India and much of Africa), the approved text demands the “immediate and unconditional withdrawal” of the invading troops, the cessation of hostilities and a “just and lasting” peace.
In that sense, D.W. reported that the UN General Assembly gave a new example of the international isolation that Russia is experiencing by approving by a large majority the resolution calling for peace in Ukraine.
This step comes at a time when kyiv has insisted that the international community must choose between “good and evil”.
At the same time, the UN resolution ratifies support for Ukrainian sovereignty and its territorial integrity. In turn, it rejects Russian claims to annex parts of the country that are occupied.
The UN demands that Moscow respect “the internationally recognized borders” of Ukraine. Russia has used its veto power to prevent binding resolutions in the UN Security Council.
