The International Organization for Migration (IOM), together with the United Nations Agencies for Refugees (Acnur) and Children (Unicef) expressed this Friday the 14th their concern “over the continuous restrictions on access to asylum” suffered by migrants at the borders between Mexico and the United States, due to the so-called Title 42.
In a joint statementthe three UN agencies reiterated their call “for an urgent end to them.”
The United States announced on Wednesday a new program that gives legal status for two years to Venezuelan migrants, initially 24,000, who arrive by plane and have a sponsor.
Also, it will return to Mexico the majority of Venezuelans who are intercepted after crossing the southern border through Title 42, a public health regulation imposed at the beginning of the pandemic and inherited from the Administration of former President Donald Trump (2017-2021). .

“Every day that these policies are maintained, more desperate people, families, girls and boys are put at risk (…) many people subject to these measures (…) have been sent to border communities with significant security challenges, support networks limited and inadequate accommodation capacities, which makes their return to Mexico dangerous and unsustainable.
They also assured that “it is possible to achieve fair and efficient reception and processing systems at national borders, including the border between the United States and Mexico.”

For this reason, they pledged their help throughout the continent “to strengthen reception and processing capacities, support regular migration and expand safe pathways for asylum seekers and migrants.”
Regarding the reception program for Venezuelans, the three UN agencies expressed their “satisfaction” as they recognize “the increase in mixed movements, the risks for the affected people and the pressures on the countries of the region.” For this reason, they are encouraged by a new safe and regular route for entry to the United States and hope to obtain more details about its implementation.
These pathways, they added, “can be essential to offer alternatives to irregular and dangerous movements and an effective way to promote an equitable sharing of responsibilities.”
Excluded from the program are Venezuelans deported from the US in the last five years, those who have entered Panama or Mexico irregularly, or those who have a permanent residence or nationality of a country other than Venezuela.
About 70% of the 151,582 irregular migrants who arrived in Panama between January and September last after crossing the Darién Gap, the jungle that serves as a natural border with Colombia, are Venezuelans. They all head to the United States.
