The International Maritime University of Panama (UMIP) and the National College of Journalists (CONAPE), today signed a cooperation framework agreement, with the aim of promoting mutual collaboration, in higher training projects with the implementation of a Diploma in Journalism Maritime that will dictate this house of specialized study.

The document was signed by the rector of the UMIP, Víctor Luna Barahona, and journalist Gricelda Esther Melo, president of CONAPE, in the presence of engineer Enrique Clement, president of the Panama Maritime Chamber, who acted as honor witness.

With this alliance, a first step of great importance is taken to start the path towards the improvement of social communication in maritime, port, logistics and coastal marine issues.

Rector Luna Barahona reaffirmed that the signing of the agreement constitutes an alliance committed to keeping the community of journalists and social communicators updated on the latest trends, concepts, practices, developments, skills and innovations in the maritime and coastal marine sector.

During her speech, Gricelda Melo thanked each of the managers of this commitment, which she described as a dream come true. She stressed that there is nothing more rewarding than being able to speak properly about something you know, and that is the objective of the Diploma in Maritime Journalism; “an unprecedented initiative in the field of journalism”.

“Panama is a country of service, a logistics country, and we as communicators have the responsibility to train and specialize in this field to communicate without making mistakes,” said the CONAPE president.

The course will be aimed at journalists who work in the media and those who have the vision to undertake independently in this thriving sector. It will also serve to enhance the performance of those who currently work in the information and public relations departments of entities linked to maritime and logistics activities.
