the ukrainian president, Volodimir Zelensky called on the Americans on Tuesday to “maintain unbreakable unity” to the “restoration of peace” in Ukraine, coinciding with the holding of mid-term elections in the United States, the results of which could affect Washington’s support for kyiv.
“I ask you to maintain an unbreakable unity, as is the case now, and until the very day when we will hear all these important words that we have dreamed of, until we hear that peace has finally been restored,” Trump said in a speech from kyiv, where he received the American “Medal of Freedom.”
Zelensky thanked “President Biden, both parties in Congress and all American citizens” the significant financial, military and diplomatic support given to Ukraine since Russia invaded the country on February 24.
Washington has been kyiv’s main ally ever since, sanctioning Moscow and much of the Russian economy, supplying the Ukrainian military with high-precision HIMARS artillery systems, among other military equipment, and providing intelligence advice on the ground.
In mid-May, the US Congress approved a $40 billion package to support Ukraine’s war efforts.
On Tuesday, Zelensky also declared himself “honored” to receive the “Medal of Freedom” from Philadelphia, but he wanted to dedicate the decoration to “all the women and men of Ukraine” who “show the biggest autocracy in the world that the only thing it can achieve in Ukraine is defeat.”
He cited “heroic soldiers”, “volunteers” and other “energy sector employees, that restore access to electricity (…) every time Russian missiles and Iranian drones bomb power plants.”
“For us, freedom is the main word and what truly unites all Ukrainians,” he said. in the video, about ten minutes.
