Ukrainian officials confirmed Wednesday night the Russian army’s capture of Kherson, a port city of 290,000 inhabitants in the south of the country.
“The occupants are in all parts of the city and They are very dangerous.” the head of the regional administration, Guennady Lakhuta, said on Telegram.
In the morning, Moscow had announced the capture of this city on the shores of the Black Sea, in the greatest victory of its troops since the beginning of the invasion seven days ago.
Kherson Mayor Igor Kolykhayev said he had spoken with the “armed guests” at a municipal administration building.
“We had no weapons and we were not aggressive.. We show that we work to secure the city and we try to stop the consequences of the invasion,” he said in a message on Facebook.
“We encountered enormous difficulties with the collection and burial of the dead, the delivery of food and medicine, the collection of waste, the management of accidents, etc,” he said.
The mayor announced a night curfew and movement restriction by car, while claiming not to have “made any promises” to the Russians and “have simply asked them not to shoot at people”.
“So far everything is going well. The flag that flies above us is Ukrainian. And for this to continue, these demands must be respected,” he added.
The Russian army had announced at dawn that it had seized Kherson, located a hundred kilometers from the Crimean peninsula that Moscow annexed in 2014.
The invading troops have already taken over another important port of the country, Berdyansk, and they are attacking the one in Mariúpol, whose mayor Vadim Boichenko assured that ukrainian forces they “dignifiedly repelled” the attacks.
“Today has been the most difficult and cruelest day of the seven days of war. Today, they simply wanted to destroy us,” he denounced in a video by Telegram, accusing the Russians of having “fired on residential buildings”.
“Unfortunately, essential infrastructure was once again damaged. We are once again without electricity, without water, without heating,” he said.
