Ukraine aspires to be a candidate to join the EU in June 2022

The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, was visited by the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Boris Johnson, who promised him weapons and money.

The Deputy Prime Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration of Ukraine, Olga Stefanishina, expressed this Saturday, April 9, her hope that her country could be considered as a candidate to join the European Union by June 2022.

“We hope that at the summit of European Union leaders in June this year, Ukraine will become a candidate for membership, and this process will open up new political horizons for us, but above all financial horizons,” Stefanishina said.

This, after the president of the European Council, Ursula Von der Leyen – who was visiting Ukraine together with Josep Borrell, High Commissioner of the European Union for Foreign Policy – spoke with the president of that country, Volodímir Zelenski, at who promised to speed up the process of entering the bloc.

Von der Leyen advanced that the Commission will prepare the report on the Ukrainian candidacy “in weeks”, once it answers the questions of the report that Von der Leyen herself handed to Zelensky.

Meanwhile, the Ukrainian leader maintains his willingness to negotiate with Russia for a ceasefire, but the negotiations were suspended after the Bucha massacre was recorded. He insisted that his struggle for sovereignty runs parallel to the talks.

But Zelensky was surprised by a visit from British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, who promised kyiv armored vehicles and anti-ship missiles; as well as a new financing item in the order of 500 million dollars through the World Bank.

Meanwhile, the Ukrainian Defense Ministry revealed that 132 “tormented bodies of tortured and murdered citizens” were found in the city of Makariv, in the kyiv region, after Russian troops recently left those areas.

To document Russian atrocities, the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry today announced the creation of an online archive to document war crimes committed by Russia in Ukraine with evidence, he added, that will help ensure that their perpetrators do not escape justice.

Ukrainian Deputy Prime Minister Iryna Vereshchuk reported that the “third exchange” of prisoners with Russia took place this Saturday, which allowed the release of 12 Ukrainian soldiers and 14 civilians.

“By order of President Zelensky, the third prisoner exchange took place today. Twelve of our soldiers are coming home, including a female officer. We have also allowed the release of 14 civilians, including nine women,” Vereshchuk wrote on Telegram.

Russia, in parallel, sought to reorganize its chain of command more than a month after the invasion of Ukraine began. according to the newspaper The countryGeneral Alexander Dvornikov was appointed to lead the campaign, who handles the experience of the civil war in Syria.

In fact, several NGOs warned that Dvornikov has a history of crimes and bombings against the civilian population in the operations he directs. He is even credited with his alleged participation in the attack on the Kramatorsk station, where more than 50 people were killed.
