At noon on February 28, 2022, the Ukrainian President signed in Kiev an application addressed to the European Union, to be a part of it.
Along with the president of Ukraine, Volodímir Zelensk,i was the prime minister Danys Shmyhal and the president of the Parliament of that country, Ruslán Stefanchuk, who said that “Ukrainians have long shown that we are an inalienable part of the European community and the time has come to stamp it on paper.”
The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, replied, for her part, that Ukraine “is one of us and we want it with us”, although he did not give dates.
Thus, Ukraine’s application for the country’s entry into the European Union (EU) was made official, in the midst of the conflict with Russia.
The process can take between 15 and 18 months.However, community sources explained to EFE that “this period may be longer or shorter, depending on political considerations.”
Zelensky thanked his partners for “support and quick decisions” in the framework of the offensive launched by Russia against Ukraine.
At the moment, the European Union is giving military aid to Ukraine against the Russian offensive.
