At least two powerful explosions were heard this Thursday by AFP journalists in the center of Kyiv and other international media, shortly after Russian President Vladimir Putin’s announcement of a military operation against Ukraine.
In the port city of Mariupolthe main city controlled by Kiev near the front line in the east of the country, powerful explosions were also heard, AFP journalists confirmed.
In New York, Ukraine asked Russia at the UN to “stop the war”.
Russia must “stop the war”, Ukrainian Ambassador to the UN Sergiy Kyslytsya urged at the UN Security Council at an emergency meeting on Ukraine.
“It’s not a war, it’s a military operation,” his Russian counterpart Vassily Nebenzia replied, responding to his Ukrainian counterpart.
