A doctoral research at the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG) has developed a new method that may contribute to the treatment of brain cancer. The study by now doctor Isadora Carvalho resulted in the creation of a nanomaterial that can be adopted for the application of drugs to cells infected by tumors.
The research was concerned with improving the drug’s arrival at the tumor site and causing fewer side effects. Cancer treatment causes many side effects in patients and is often quite aggressive.
The device was created to carry two drugs used in the treatment of brain cancer, KLA and doxorubicin. Successful tests were performed in vitrothose that do not involve people.
In these assays, the nanomaterial attacked tumor cells without harming healthy cells. When the material enters the cell, the medication is released. Another effect of the device was to illuminate the affected areas with fluorescence. This allows you to form a bioimage and visualize where each component is in the cell.
