UEFA punished this Friday with a fine of 50,000 euros ($50,900) to the Turkish club Fenerbahçe for the chants of their fans in favor of the Russian president, Vladimir Putin, during the match that measured them on July 27 in Istanbul against the Ukrainian Dynamo kyiv.
In addition, Fenerbahce was punished with a partial closure of its stadium (of 5,000 seats) in their next European home game for “throwing objects, a provocative message of an offensive nature and illicit chants”.
The match in which the incidents took place corresponded to the Champions League qualifying second round and Dynamo kyiv won 2-1.
After the goal scored by the Ukrainian Vitaly Buyalsky (57)a few hundred Fenerbahçe fans chanted the name of the Russian head of state, according to videos posted on social media.
Ukraine’s ambassador to Turkey Vasyl Bodnar condemned those chants and Fenerbahçe apologized.
Russia maintains a military offensive against Ukraine since the month of February.
