UDI versus Republicans: the fractures left by the rejection of AC against Minister Siches in the opposition

One of the issues that stressed the Independent Democratic Union (UDI) last Tuesday was the support received by various trade unionists for the previous question of the constitutional accusation against the Minister of the Interior, Izkia Siches. This, in short, meant the rejection of the libel, which caused marked and evident annoyance within the Republican Party.

As reported Third, after the fact various accusations were launched between both parties. In fact, the Republican deputy Cristián Araya, manifested himself through social networks and accused his district peer, Guillermo Ramírez (UDI) of “defending” the Secretary of State. Given this, the parliamentarian called him “irresponsible and opportunistic.”

In the corridors of Congress, the conversations continued, since, although from the Republican Party they felt that the CA had its fruits due to the votes it obtained, -despite falling-, they still showed their annoyance against their peers from the UDI, who they accused of not defending the victims of citizen security problems, said the aforementioned medium.

Behind the rejection of the accusation of Minister Siches, the UDI indicates that it has a strategy behind the action. This is to seek to differentiate itself from the Republican Party and show itself as a more “modern and dialoguing” community in the search for agreements.

The idea is a design elaborated -by referents of the party- so that the UDI stops being seen as a community that has historically opposed changes, for the same reason they stopped carrying out typical actions with the purpose of influencing the situation.

As a result, the senator and president of the UDI, Javier Macaya, proposed reducing the quorum for the constitutional reforms to 2/3. To this were added the senators of the Christian Democracy, Matías Walker and Ximena Rincón to change the quorum to 4/7.

According to deputy Christian Moreira, “the fact that we are more open to dialogue with all the other parties is going to give us leadership within the center-right.”

Other opposition officials, who share the action of the UDI, indicated that having turned “their back” to the CA, in addition to differentiating themselves from the Republican Party, has ensured that Siches has remained in office, since -privately- They point out that his figure favors the Rejection, arguing that the Government’s management is linked to the constituent process.

This has caused internal fractures in the UDI, in the “base” militancy, since they are suspicious that the party does not have a more “supervisory” role to the Government of the President of the Republic, Gabriel Boric.
