UdelaR announced that "there are no indications" of hacking to its database from Argentina

The University of the Republic (UdelaR) issued a statement on Thursday the 22nd informing that “University authorities and its Central Information Technology Service (SECIU) receive, through press reports and social networks, the news of an alleged data leak from Uruguayans for sale among hackers (there is talk of 6 million records) in which reference is made to the University”. The information spread in Argentina through social networks, in which a “hacker”, Mauro Eldritch, warned that “a threat actor is selling a batch of information about all the citizens of #Uruguay«. He added that “it would contain 6 million records including ID and full name. It would have been drawn from a national university.”

Once contact was made with this transcendence, the technical teams immediately activated two procedures.

First of all, the internal analysis of the systems and databases, looking for possible signs of leaks. Parallel to this action, the procedure for reporting these situations to the National Center for Response to Information Security Incidents (CERTuy) was immediately initiated. This AGESIC body is in charge of cybersecurity at the country level.

Since then, “CERTuy and SECIU have been working in coordination to investigate the veracity of this message that emerged on the networks. The situation is communicated to the computer counterparts of the Udelar services and faculties so that they collaborate in the investigation, ”says a statement from UdelaR.

After consulting with the relevant technical teams, the rectory of the University of the Republic informs that, at the time of issuing this statement that “There are no indications that the institution’s computer systems have been violated.”

In addition, “there are indications that the published data includes information that is not even included in the institution’s academic or administrative records.”

The text also adds that “these indications also indicate that the number of identification cards disseminated exceeds in quantity those that appear in our academic records”, and that the work of the technical teams continues, whose news will be communicated in a timely manner.
